Wild animals don't deal with overweight or obesity issues. How many overweight wild antelope have you ever seen? What about morbidly obese zebras waddling around the savannah? Wild animals don't usually eat cooked or processed foods. They eat raw foods, in their natural state and maintain ideal body weight. The human body is designed to run on the clean fuel of raw foods too, just like all the other animals.

Yes, color matters nad yellow-orange veggies like carrots, sweet potatoes, and winter squash are chock-full of carotenoids. Why should you care about carotenoids? These good-for-you nutrients fight the DNA damage that can make your body old (or sick) before its time. Over the course of your lifetime, your DNA accumulates damage every time it gets copied to create a new cell. It's like when you make a copy of a copy of a copy on the Xerox machine. Little flaws and imperfections start to show up. Same thing can happen with your DNA. And that's not such a great thing, because it can lead to that ultimate cell-replication error: cancer. Now the fact is that no foods are guaranteed to protect you from cancer, but fruits and vegetables contain fiber, vitamins, and phytochemicals that have a function in preventing cancer. One reason is that fiber is the plant material in our diet that is not digested. It keeps food moving through our intestines. Fiber, which comes from whole-grain breads and cereals, as well as fruit and vegetables.

There was an analysis reported on out of Sweden in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition regarding the link between obesity and the risk of colon and rectal cancer. Thirty perspective studies were included in the meta-analysis of body mass index (BMI). Increases in BMI were positively associated with increased risk of rectal cancer in men but not women. Colon cancer, however, seemed to correlate with increasing waist circumference in both men and women.

Sauerkraut is a fermented food that is a good source of fiber, vitamins, and friendly bacteria, which have multiple benefits for the gastrointestinal tract. It also contains vinegar, which aids in digestion by facilitating the absorption of nutrients. Years ago, before modern-day food processing, people ate fermented foods rich in lactic-acid bacteria on a regular basis. These beneficial bacteria help to protect you against exposure to questionable bacteria in our food and water. Plus they help balance the production of acid in your stomach, protecting your stomach and intestinal lining, and perhaps making it easier to digest your food.

How can we forestall aging? Longevity research has uncovered unrivaled proven anti-aging method to slow aging and extend lifespan in mammals. Among them is caloric limitation of a nutrient-rich diet. Longevity research has established this to work in rats and mice, and it's now being studied in monkeys. While no anti-aging therapies have been shown to stop aging, there's a body of scientific evidence suggesting that they have this ability.

Over-the-counter laxatives are big business, generating sales of more than $800 million per year. This is more common as we age and it's most important to deal with it to keep your machinery working properly! Among the safest and most healthful are Metamucil and other products that contain psyllium which is an excellent source of soluble fiber and bulks up the stool and stimulates peristalsis, the wavelike contractions of the colon that keep things moving along. Researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas recently tested a homemade concoction against psyllium. They found that it worked just as well and cost half as much. In a six-week study, patients taking the homemade solution, made up of applesauce, wheat bran, and prune juice, had improvements in bowel function that actually surpassed those of a control group taking the usual dose of psyllium. In addition to soluble fiber, which also helps lower cholesterol, the mixture provides a hefty dose of phytonutrients.
