At an anti-aging conference, entitled "Diet and Optimum Health," sponsored by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University one of the key nutrients discussed was alpha lipoic acid (ALA). In animal and human studies, this compound has established that is will slow the aging process, improve blood flow, enhance immune function and promote healthy blood sugar and many other functions. Dr. Tory Hagen, a researcher at Linus Pauling Institute, noted, "the evidence suggests that lipoic acid is actually a low-level stressor that turns on the basic cellular defenses of the body, including many of those that naturally decline with age." He further added, "In particular, it tends to restore levels of glutathione, a protective antioxidant and detoxification compound to those of a young animal.

Researchers at Oregon State University now believe that ALA does not work directly on cells but rather indirectly, by giving a boost to declining cellular function. Hagen adds, "Our studies have shown that mice supplemented with lipoic acid have a cognitive ability, behavior and genetic expression of almost 100% detoxification and antioxidant genes that are comparable to that of young animals. They aren't just living longer, they're living better – and that's the goal we're after."

They aren't just living longer, they're living better – and that's the goal we're after."

There was another study published several years ago where aged rats were given a combination of ALC and ALA. We have recommend this combination in the past as alpha lipoic acid (ALA), along acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) are a great antiaging combination. Not only did these rats perform in a more youthful fashion, when their brains were autopsied, it actually showed regeneration of brain neurons and tissue. Whether this happens in a similar fashion in humans we don't know yet but ALC and ALA have been put into the category of anti-aging nutrients.

ALC works by providing fuel for the cell via the Kreb's cycle and promotes healthy mitochondrial function in a manner similar but complimentary to coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). ALA, CoQ10 and ALC combined are the three most powerful anti-aging nutrients you can take that promote healthy energy, cellular health, cardiovascular health, healthy blood sugar and optimal neurological health.

This is contrary to earlier government recommendations that call for a far greater expenditure of energy, Even lowly amounts of exercise as 10 minutes a day can improve overall cardiovascular fitness in overweight, sedentary, postmenopausal women who, previous to participation in this study reported yesterday, had rarely broken a sweat.
"For those who are super-sedentary, they start getting benefits right away," said Church, director of preventive medicine research at Louisiana State University's Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which designs the food pyramid, has added exercise to the government's prescriptions for healthy living. However The USDA guidelines suggest that 60 minutes to 90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise is what is required to manage body weight and prevent gradual weight gain in adulthood.

This is at the least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity, above your usual activity, is required on most days of the week to reduce the risk of chronic disease in adulthood. The thing about the government exercise prescription is that it is basically for weight loss. So in many ways we're talking about apples and oranges," Church said.

He studied a group of 464 overweight and obese women between the ages of 57 and 75; 102 did not exercise. Three groups of exercisers were assigned to take part in low-level daily programs. Church and his colleagues found at the end of their analysis that peak oxygen consumption, a measure of cardiovascular fitness, increased by 4.2 percent compared with the group that did nothing. The exercise consisted of riding an exercise bike and walking on a treadmill.

Most of them were obese and at a point where their bad habits were going to catch up with them. Dr. Suzanne R. Steinbaum, director of the heart disease program at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, said Church's study is good news. "Sixty to 90 minutes of exercise on most, if not all, days of the week is an overwhelming concept," Steinbaum said.

Aging is inevitable with the breakdown and degeneration of cells, organs and onset of poor health. There are, however, three amazing nutrients that can help slow and even turn back the hands of time when it comes to aging. Those three miracle nutrients are acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC), alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).

In a study published in Free Radical Biological Medicine in March 2005, researchers from the Institute for Aging and Alzheimer's Disease in Fort Worth, Texas performed a study in aged mice1. The study focused on determining whether supplemental intake of CoQ10 or vitamin E (alpha tocopherol) alone or in conjunction could improve brain function in aging mice. Groups of mice 24 months old were administered either CoQ10, vitamin E or both for a total of 14 weeks. Researchers noted that the findings suggested that concurrent supplementation of alpha tocopherol (vitamin E) along with CoQ10 is more likely to be effective for age-related learning deficits than CoQ10 or alpha tocoperol alone.

In another study published in Experimental Gerontology in February 2006, a group of mice with accelerated senescence (memory loss) were supplemented with CoQ10. Researchers concluded that lifelong dietary supplementation with CoQ10 decreased the degree of senescence in middle-aged mice. I have written in past newsletters about human studies published in the most prestigious and reliable neurological medical journals using 400 to 1,200 mg per day of CoQ10 to slow the loss of brain cells that support the maintenance of healthy movement as we age. It's well known if we do nothing, around the fourth decade of life, brain cells that produce a neurotransmitter called dopamine, which is required for healthy movement and control of muscles, start to die.

2) Prevent kidney stones.
Drink at least eight glasses of lemon water a day Lemons contain potassium citrate, a chemical that may stop kidney stones from forming.

3) Sidestep a hangover.
Drink lighter colored alcohols, such as gin and vodka. They are less likely to cause a hangover than darker alcoholic beverages (bourbon, scotch, brandy, whiskey, red wine) because they have fewer congeners, the by-products of fermentation and aging that give beverages their distinctive flavors and colors. And A last-call tip: Order a double virgin screwdriver. Fructose, one of the sugars in orange juice, can speed up the metabolism of alcohol by as much as 25 percent.

4) Give the E.R. a head start if you must go.
Keep important medical information in your wallet, including drug sensitivities or allergies, prescription and nonprescription drugs you're taking, the name and phone number of your primary physician, medical conditions you're being treated for, and any major medical problems experienced by your parents. And put a copy of your baseline EKG in your wallet, too.

5) Have a PSA test.
Detect prostate cancer early. The American Cancer Society and the American Urological Association recommend an annual digital rectal exam and an annual PSA (prostate-specific antigen) screening beginning at age 50. (If you are African-American or have a family history of prostate cancer, start this test at 45.)

6) Walk for 30 minutes a day.
That's all you need to do to move from couch potato to moderately fit. Don’t stop there but that change that will provide you with significant health benefits.

7) Stretch and hold the stretch for 60 seconds on first awakening.
Just like you see the dogs do it when they wake from a nap! By your 40s, your muscles are less pliable. Stretch for a full minute to reduce injury. If you're under 40 then 30 seconds is adequate.

 Avoid cold sores.
If you are prone to them, limit your intake of arginine rich foods; such as beer, chocolate, cola, peas, and peanuts. The herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores needs the amino acid arginine to do it’s dirty work.

9) Dry brush your teeth.
It will cut tartar by 60 percent and reduces bleeding of the gums by 50 percent. Using a dry, soft brush, start scrubbing the insides of your bottom teeth. Then hit the insides of the top ones before working your way to the outer surfaces. Finally, rinse, spit, and brush again briefly-this time with tooth paste.

10) Never develop cancer.
Only 5 to 10 percent of cancers are inherited. The rest are due to interactions with the environment, mainly smoking. One of the most important things you can do is eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. A 14-year study found that men whose diets were highest in fruits and vegetables had a 70 percent lower risk of digestive-tract cancers. Here's the easiest way to reach your quota – simply never eat a meal that doesn't contain fruit or vegetables.

11) Don't drink soda.
Aside from providing you with more than your share of empty calories, soft drinks contain high amounts of fructose, which researchers have found may weaken your bones.

12) But do drink wine and beer.
Studies reveal that drinking one or two glasses a day or a beer may lower your risk of type-2 diabetes and be good for the heart.
