Nowhere is the aging process more visible than on your skin. While a few lines give you character, no one welcomes age-related skin changes such as wrinkles, loss of suppleness, and skin discoloration.

To live a long time in vibrant health, taking nutritional supplements is critical. However, you must round out your program with some positive lifestyle choices. To undertake a longevity-promoting lifestyle, you should:

    1. Eat a low-fat diet.
2. Refrain from smoking, and avoid inhaling second-hand smoke.
3. Undertake a program of regular physical activity. Always check with your doctor before starting a strenuous exercise program.
4. Control stress as best you can.
5. Exercise your brain. Play games that make you think, read books that challenge you, listen to music and cut back on television watching.

Nowhere is the aging process more visible than on your skin. While a few lines give you character, no one welcomes age-related skin changes such as wrinkles, loss of suppleness, and skin discoloration. The antioxidant vitamins discussed in Secret #1 (especially vitamin A, beta-carotene, and vitamin C) protect your skin against free-radical damage and help produce collagen. Essential fatty acids, both omega-3 and omega-6, are also important for skin health.

A new generation of vitamin A-based skin creams is now available. Called remeital, it's weaker than Retin A, less irritating, yet it retains its cousin's ability to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and skin discoloration. I recommend using it only at night, as it does increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun.

For dry skin, you need to replenish your body's supply of omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oils and flaxseed oil. Fish oils are available in capsules, and flaxseed can be added to hot cereal, vegetables, or salad.

I also recommend that you drink at least eight glasses of clean water a day, use a good moisturizing lotion throughout the day, and protect your skin with a good sunscreen.

It seems to be universally believed that as we age our bodies fall apart. You don't have to follow this pattern.

Alcohol is neutralized into carbon dioxide and water in the liver, your body’s primary organ for detoxification. Along the way, however, numerous intermediary products are formed—some more toxic than alcohol itself.

Alcohol is neutralized into carbon dioxide and water in the liver, your body’s primary organ for detoxification. Along the way, however, numerous intermediary products are formed—some more toxic than alcohol itself. Chief among these is acetaldehyde, a close relative of formaldehyde (the substance used to embalm cadavers). Acetaldehyde increases the production of free radicals that damage the liver and stimulate the brain to trigger feelings of nausea and discomfort.

Supplement With Amino Acids, Vitamins, and Herbs
Certain nutrients, taken before that first drink, can neutralize the effects of acetaldehyde. The most important of these is the amino acid cysteine. By supplementing with cysteine (in the form of N-acetylcysteine), you can actually help your body transform toxic acetaldehyde into glutathione, a potent free-radical fighter and the key agent used by your liver to neutralize harmful substances.

Vitamin C, a powerful water-soluble antioxidant, also helps maintain glutathione levels. Because alcohol is a diuretic, you lose vital water-based nutrients when you drink, so supplementing with vitamin C beforehand will help reduce the after-effects of alcohol. The B-complex vitamins are also water-soluble, and deficiencies are common with alcohol use. Make sure you take extra B vitamins when you drink, especially vitamin B1 (thiamin), which is rapidly destroyed by acetaldehyde.

We recommend taking an herbal extract of milk thistle before you imbibe those holiday cocktails. Its active ingredient, silymarin, is one of the most potent liver-protecting substances known. Silymarin increases the glutathione content of the liver by over 35 percent, increasing its capacity for detoxification. It also stimulates protein synthesis and helps generate new liver cells to replace those damaged during detoxification.

When the Party’s Over…
Before you go to bed, drink at least 16 ounces of water, and continue drinking lots of water the next morning—this will go a long way toward staving off a killer headache. If you do suffer a headache the following morning, don’t take acetaminophen (Tylenol). Acetaminophen in conjunction with alcohol can damage your liver, sometimes fatally.

Instead, steep wintergreen tea for 10 minutes and spike it with as much hot-pepper sauce as you can tolerate. Wintergreen contains salicylates, the active ingredient in aspirin, while hot-pepper sauce (or any powdered version of hot red peppers, such as cayenne) contains capsaicin, another painkiller.

A Recap Before the Nightcap

To protect your liver (before you drink and again the next morning), take 500 mg of N-acetylcysteine, 1,000 mg of vitamin C, 50 mg of vitamin B1, and 150 mg of standardized milk thistle extract. You can take them individually or in a multi-nutrient supplement for the liver, such as Source Naturals’ Liver Guard, found in health food stores.

Life Enhancement’s Party Pill II is another good anti-hangover supplement. In addition to cysteine, it is loaded with antioxidants, B-complex vitamins, chromium, and other vitamins and minerals that are depleted by too much alcohol.

Drink at least 16 ounces of water before bed, and again throughout the following day.

For a morning-after headache, sip wintergreen tea spiked with hot pepper.

Remember, moderate alcohol use (1 to 2 drinks a day) appears to have heart-protective effects, but more than this amount negatively impacts your health.

Yes, it's that time of year again and the common cold is everywhere. Now that winter is here I’d like to share a sore throat cure. You simply mix 1/16 of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper in about 1/2 cup of warm water and use it as a gargle. At first do this several times the first day if you feel a sore throat coming on. Occasionally you may have to use it on the second day but most of the time the problem is cured on the first day. You can increase the cayenne amout to 1/8 teaspoon after the first time. It doesn’t burn like you think it would. Just try to keep the liquid off your lips. You may let a little go down my throat but I’m not sure that’s necessary. The reason this works is that cayenne pepper contains the compound capsaicin, which helps stop the transmission of pain impulses. This may help explain how it stops the pain associated with a sore throat and why capsaicin cream is effective at soothing painful arthritic joints and stopping headaches. It also increases local circulation to the area, which provides a soothing, warming effect.

Cutting back on processed carbs, especially sugar, could lower your risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness in people 60 and older. What makes refined carbs so bad for your peepers? Seems their high glycemic index may be partly to blame. High-glycemic-index foods boost a whole bunch of bad things linked to AMD — like increases in oxidative stress, inflammation, and blood-fat levels.

Good carbs versus bad carbs

Carbohydrates have gotten a bad rap, and that's a shame. Eat the right kind of carbs — the low-glycemic index (GI) kind — and you'll lose weight and lower both LDL and total cholesterol. Eat the wrong kind and you will suffer the consequences both in heart and eye problems. GI index refers to how quickly starches break down and affect your blood sugar. Opt for low-GI lentils, beans, bran cereal, and high-fiber fruits and veggies to reach your lighter, heart-healthier goals.

Don't be swayed by low-carb diets. You need carbs to supply your body with energy, fiber, B-vitamins, magnesium, and other important nutrients. Completely eliminating carbs from your diet isn't healthy. Instead, go for low-GI carbs, the kind your body digests slowly, to help keep your blood sugar steady. You'll stay full longer, have more consistent energy, and feel better overall.

Researchers recently tested this out with four groups of obese men and women. Each group followed a different diet, but calorie intake was the same (women 1,400 calories a day, men 1,900). The diets varied in their percentage of protein, high-GI carbs, and low-GI carbs. After 12 weeks, all groups lost weight, but the people who got the most calories from low-GI carbs also lowered their LDL and total cholesterol levels. The people in the high protein/fewer carbs (mostly high-GI carbs) group experienced an increase in LDL and total cholesterol levels. Ouch!

Here's a great Table that will break down the glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) value

As you grow older, it makes sense to pay attention to maintaining a healthy prostate. This walnut-sized gland, which rests under the bladder and surrounds the urethra, produces most of your seminal fluid — and is therefore critical to both urinary and sexual health. The good news is there’s a natural solution for men who want to support prostate health. These simple steps can help keep your prostate functioning properly for life…and sleep peacefully through the night.

Diet

Good nutrition supports a healthy prostate so your first line of defense for protecting your prostate is to make substantial reductions in your fat intake — cut back particularly on the animal and saturated fat so common to the American diet. Move away from high-fat meats and dairy products. This kind of change will help keep your prostate safe and healthy throughout your life.

Exercise your way to a healthy prostate and vital sex life

Exercise improves blood flow and encourages capillary beds to open, placing less resistance on arteries and arterioles. Exercise also improves the elasticity and responsiveness of the arteries — an important factor in sexual potency, stamina, and enhancement.

I recommend you start your exercise program by walking briskly 20 minutes, four times a week. Once you can do this comfortably, it’s time to increase your pace. To do this, don’t lengthen our stride; instead, increase the number of steps you take per minute. Work up to 30 to 60 minutes of exercise four or more times per week.

Aim for regular, not rigorous, exercise. It's better to be gentle and consistent rather than strenuous and sporadic. Your goal — not your starting point — should be 30 to 60 minutes of exercise four or five times per week.

Good nutrition supports a healthy prostate and vital sex life

Your first line of defense for protecting your prostate and reviving your sex life is to make substantial reductions in your fat intake — cut back particularly on the animal and saturated fat so common to the American diet. Move away from high-fat meats and dairy products. This kind of change will help keep your prostate healthy throughout your life and enhance your pleasure.

At the same time, make sure you're getting enough of the good fats — especially omega-3 fatty acids — which are considered essential because they can only be obtained through foods or supplements. Cold water fish (salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, tuna and trout) and flax are the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids. I recommend eating salmon or other cold-water fish several times a week, and having one to two tablespoons of flax oil, or up to one-quarter cup of freshly ground flax seed daily. Flax oil should never be heated, as its EFAs are destroyed by high temperatures. For cooking, use extra-virgin olive oil.

Make a move toward whole foods, in as close to their natural state as possible. Reach for vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. The mineral zinc is crucial to healthy prostate function, so be sure your diet includes plenty of zinc-rich foods such as oysters, pumpkin seeds, beans, and nuts. You should also cut down or eliminate your alcohol consumption — alcohol depletes both zinc and vitamin B6, which is necessary for zinc absorption. Two side benefits of these changes in diet are that you'll likely lose weight, particularly if you exercise regularly, and you'll enhance your body's immune system, cardiovascular health, and blood sugar control.

Nutrients

Saw palmetto is the best-known natural remedy for maintaining prostate health and proper urinary function as is pygeum. Clinical studies verify the important prostate-supporting benefits of these herbs.

Before you resort to any supplement or drug you should rule out health conditions like hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), diabetes, weak adrenal function, and an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) or pituitary gland as causes. Hormone imbalances, chronic infections, pain, cancer, and vitamin deficiencies can cause depression as well.

One of the most commonly overlooked contributors to depression is the regular use of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. If you take drugs on a regular basis, be sure to check with your doctor about their side effects. If you’ve ruled out or addressed the above underlying causes and are still feeling blue, here are some suggestions to help you smile again. Spend more time outside. At a minimum, try to get 20 minutes of sunlight each day. Get moderate amounts of exercise. Try to walk 20–30 minutes every day. Eliminate alcohol, caffeine, and fried foods from your diet. Take milk thistle extract (standardized to 80 percent silymarin), especially if you have hepatitis C (as many Vietnam veterans do).

If your skin is oily, you'll definitely want to purchase an antiaging product that is free of oil, so that you won't have to worry about impurities being trapped in your face all day. While oily or moisturized skin has been known to have less wrinkles, you also don't want to over-moisturize your skin, since this can cause blemishes. If your skin is dry, an antiaging wrinkle cream with olive oil is probably best for you, since olive oil is light and gentle, and will give you the moisture you need to fight off fine lines and regulate oil production on the face. Vitamin C is also an important part of antiaging, so an antiaging wrinkle cream with the vitamin will most likely help your skin to be more vibrant and firm. MSM Lotion for Anti-aging and Skin Care is one of the antiaging products that is ideal for all skin types since it helps to renew the skin and provides a natural astringent in order to balance sebum production on the skin.

When skin ages, its collagen molecules break down, which leads to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Most anti-wrinkle cosmetics only contain some partial proteins or hydrolyzed collagen particles because collagen molecules are too large to enter the skin through conventional lotions and creams. Our skin needs full collagen to stay soft and smooth, and Hydroderm is a new product that can that can deliver it.

Until recently the only way for to effectively deliver collagen to the skin was through painful injections. Too make matters worse these injections were not cheap, but with Hydroderm we are now able to receive the collagen our skin needs to maintain it?s soft and smooth touch and appearance. Hydroderm is a patented Collagen Infusion Delivery System developed over the last several years by scientists working in concert with skin beauty consultants. Using Hydroderm?s technology you are now able to get collagen molecules directly to the skin. There had to be a better way to deliver collagen then through injections, and there was.

To solve this problem, Hydroderm researchers developed the patented Collagen Infusion Delivery System contained in the Wrinkle Reducer. This breakthrough formula delivers full, intact collagen molecules into the epidermis, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and creating a healthier glow. The Wrinkle Reducer also contains a natural concentrate of selected proteins that produces an immediate tightening effect for additional lift and vitality.

Taking a daily supplement of calcium can reduce the risk of fractures in people over the age of 50 by 24 percent if a large enough dose is taken, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Western Sydney and published in the medical journal Lancet.

The researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 17 different studies that examined the relationship between calcium supplementation and the risk of fractures in people over the age of 50. Among the total of 50,000 people that the studies looked at, the risk of fractures was 12 percent lower among those who were given calcium supplements, and 24 percent lower among those who were given a daily dose of 1,200 milligrams.

The study's results caused lead author Benjamin Tang to conclude that even among those who take calcium supplements, many are not taking them regularly enough or not taking a large enough dose.

"Unfortunately, most of the tablets are low dosage," he said.

According to Tang, people over the age of 50 should be supplementing with at least 1,200 milligrams per day.

A small number of study participants suffered a side effect of minor stomach upsets. Tang cautioned that because most of the data analyzed by the research team came from studies on women, who are much more likely to suffer fractures or osteoporosis, the effects or side effects for men may be different.

Approximately one in six women suffer a bone fracture after the age of 50, compared with approximately one in 20 men.

According to the United Kingdom's Food Standards Agency, a person should be able to acquire all the calcium they need from a healthy, balanced diet. Certain foods, such as green, leafy vegetables and nuts, are naturally high in calcium, while others are fortified. In the United States, many beverages such as soy milk and orange juice are regularly fortified with calcium, as are bread and margarine in the United Kingdom.

Noted holistic nutritionist Mike Adams (The Health Ranger) notes that Vitamin D must be present in the body for proper assimilation of calcium. People who take calcium supplements but remain Vitamin D deficient, he says, are wasting their money on supplements and not getting the beneficial results they may expect. The majority of Americans, Canadians and Britons are chronically deficient in Vitamin D.
