The embarrasement of "passing gas" can be great. Although we don’t like to talk about it, everybody passes gas on occasion, and with some people it's quite common on a regular basis. In fact, the average person has 10 to 15 “problems” with this every day! This produces a total of a pint or two of gas. It comes from air we swallow, chemical reactions in the gut, and bacteria living in the intestines. But just because it’s normal doesn’t mean it’s pleasant by any means. Excessive gas can result in bloating and discomfort, not to mention embarrassment. There is an old, inexpensive, over-the-counter drug that can give you quick, safe relief. Simethicone is the generic name for the active ingredient in Gas-X, Maalox, Mylanta, and related products.

Senate bill S.1082 is set to KILL them! Compounding pharmacies have been around for hundreds of years. In fact, all pharmacists used to compound drugs before Big Pharma gained control of medicine. But today they are under fire. Pharmaceutical companies suffered a stinging economic reversal after the WHI trial exposed the dangers of conventional hormone replacement therapy. Women discarded their drugs and flocked to physicians who prescribed bioidentical hormones, and then turned to compounding pharmacists to fill their prescriptions. This put the drug companies on the defensive most especially Wyeth, whose annual sales plummeted by more than a billion dollars. In 2006, Wyeth filed a Citizen Petition with the FDA requesting that compounding pharmacies be prohibited from providing natural hormones.

Following widespread criticism by the public over proposed CAM Guidelines that the FDA tried to slip under the radar, the Food and Drug Administration has now extended the deadline for public comment to May 29. This proposal represents a new era of thinking at the FDA and describe the agency's intentions to regulate herbs, functional foods, therapeutic oils, nutritional supplements and even physical devices as either "drugs" or "medical devices." These guidelines have been widely depicted as a brazen FDA attempt to destroy naturopathy and alternative medicine.

Osteoporosis is a worrisome condition for many women, and with good reason. In the ten years after menopause, a woman can lose as much as ten percent of her former bone mass. The thinned bones are a setup for fractures of the spine, hip, and wrist. Typical therapy is to put a woman on a prescription drug: estrogens; bisphosphonates such as Fosamax and Boniva; or estrogen receptor modulators such as Evista. The drugs do work in the short term, reducing or preventing the bone loss associated with menopause, but the end result is often lower-quality bone. In addition a woman usually needs to keep taking the drug or the effects disappear.

Warning, many supplement companies are offering some form of grape complex for sale that claims to contain some resveratrol. The reason for the recent attention was focused on a publication in the journal Nature that demonstrated improved health and survival in mice fed a high-fat diet supplemented with resveratrol, the same flavonoid that has been shown to increase the life span of a variety of organisms, including yeast, worms, flies, fish, and mice. Anti-aging medicine is widely misunderstood because it isn't to simply increase the years of your life, but to increase the life as you age. Who wants to live to be 100 if you were a mental and physical wreck during your last 20 years? We’ve all known people for whom aging was so enfeebling that their passing on was a blessing to them and to their loved ones. Debilitation is what we want to prevent. We want quality years, not quantity. We want to add healty living and not simply increase our lifespan.
