Good news for coffee drinkers. It has been shown to increase longevity as well as health. Compared to people who avoid coffee, those who drink at least two cups a day are 80 percent less likely to develop cirrhosis of the liver (even if they drink a lot of alcohol), half as likely to have gallstones, and 25 percent less apt to get colon cancer. Coffee is also protective against cancer of the liver and kidneys, and although it’s long been suspected of increasing risk of breast cancer, a recent study spanning 22 years and involving nearly 86,000 women found a weak inverse association between the two in postmenopausal females.

As we age we may often feel tired and fatigued. This fatigue may be due to emotional problems like excessive worries or poor mood, sleep disorders and/or physical problems. Is there something we can do to help with fatigue? One frequently overlooked cause of fatigue is a low or borderline-low level of vitamin B12. The best response for this is a high dosage of vitamin B12, either orally or a sublingual tablet under the tongue which is absorbed in the veins under the tongue. Ideally, methylcobalamin, which is the neuro-active form of vitamin B12, should be used. Taking folic acid together with vitamin B12 may be even more effective. Poor mood is very common and is often undiagnosed and untreated.

Physicians and therapists can usually help people with chronic poor mood. But many people with fatigue do not have major emotional problems, sleep disorders or a specific physical illness. A frequent cause of non-specific fatigue, especially as we get older, is the decreased ability of cells to produce energy. Approximately 95% of energy production occurs in "power houses" called mitochondria, located inside each cell. Mitochondria have their own membranes and their own RNA and DNA. Mitochondria produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is the main chemical for storing energy; however, this process also causes the production of free radicals which damage mitochondrial function. Is there something to try to improve mitochondrial energy production? YES!

YES!

Acetyl L-carnitine is a nutrient that helps transport long-chain fatty acids (fats) into mitochondria and increases mitochondrial energy production.
It should not be taken alone because it increases oxidative stress from free radicals. Alpha lipoic acid is a powerful "universal" antioxidant which acts in fat-soluble and water-soluble areas of our bodies. Antioxidants interact with free radicals and become inactive. Alpha lipoic acid can recycle inactive antioxidants (such as vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 or other molecules of alpha lipoic acid) back into active antioxidants.
Alpha lipoic acid also assists with the metabolism of glucose (sugar).

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have done exciting research showing that feeding old rats a combination of acetyl L-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid can improve mitochondrial function while protecting from oxidative stress from free radicals. Old rats fed with acetyl L-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid had more motor activity. They also had one-third the motor activity compared to young rats. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is needed by mitochondria for electron transfer in order to produce chemical energy (ATP). CoQ10 is another powerful antioxidant which can also protect mitochondria from free radical damage. Most importantly, Mitochondrial Energy Booster contains 200 mg of CoQ10, 300 mg of alpha lipoic acid and 1,000 mg of acetyl L-carnitine. It's also important for promoting neurological health. Acetyl L-carnitine also promotes cardiovascular and neurological health. The combination of CoQ10 together with acetyl L-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid may be even more effective for promoting cardiovascular health as well as neurological health.

It seems that as many as one in five women over age 50 may be afflicted. Hypothyroidism is not a benign condition but is serious. In addition to the common symptoms listed above, it also increases risk of heart attack, immune dysfunction, and infertility. Since thyroid hormones play an integral role in fetal growth and development, children born to women with low thyroid are at increased risk of neurological problems and lower IQs.

Hypothyroidism Is often overlooked during physical exams. If you complain to your conventional doctor about any of these symptoms, he may not think to look at thyroid function. Lipid abnormalities, depression, constipation, and other signs of hypothyroidism could be due to a variety of factors. At best, most doctors will run a blood test for thyroid function. The most sensitive of these tests is thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH, which is made in the pituitary gland, acts like a thermostat for thyroid hormone formation and release. When levels are low, TSH increases and signals the thyroid to pump up production. However, this test is far from foolproof. It’s not uncommon for patients with a normal TSH to have low levels of active thyroid hormones. However, if your TSH falls within the normal range, your doctor is not likely to give you thyroid replacement to see if it improves your condition.

Nutrients for Thyroid Support And You Should Avail Yourself Of These

The thyroid gland uses iodine to produce hormones, so it’s important to get enough of this mineral. Our average iodine level is just half of what it was 30 years ago. This is in part due to dietary factors as well as environmental toxins that interfere with iodine uptake and possibly thwart thyroid function. These include fluoride in water, cigarette smoke, and contaminantion of our water and food. To increase your intake, eat iodine-rich seafood. Iodine content in other foods varies according to the mineral levels in the soil in which they’re grown. Our primary source of iodine is iodized salt, but half the salt sold in this country, including sea salt, kosher salt, and salt used to make pickles and flavor pretzels and nuts, is not iodized. Most multivitamins contain the RDA of iodine (150 mcg), and supplements with kelp or other sources of iodine may have up to 600 mcg. These may be helpful, but some people do not tolerate supplemental iodine very well. Before you bump up your intake significantly, yous should have your urine iodine level tested. Selenium is another nutrient that supports the thyroid. A common underlying cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid gland. Recent studies have shown that 200 mcg of supplemental selenium helps decrease autoimmune-induced inflammation.

If you have any of the symptoms discussed in this article, talk to your doctor about testing your TSH level. If it’s in the normal range, request tests for free T3 and T4 (the unbound, physiologically active forms). Even if everything checks out, a closely monitored trial of natural thyroid is warranted. If you’re taking Synthroid, consider switching to natural thyroid. If your doctor is prejudiced against it, look for one versed in natural thyroid replacement. Contact ACAM (acam.org) or A4M (worldhealth. net).

This devastating condition, which affects more than 16 million Americans, is our nation’s fourth leading cause of death. The diseases that fall under the umbrella of COPD are marked by restriction of airflow to the lungs. Emphysema is a prime example. Most often caused by smoking, this disorder involves the alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. When these structures are compromised, less oxygen is inhaled with each breath.
Emphysema is often accompanied by chronic bronchitis or other pulmonary disorders that further narrow the airways and fill them with viscous mucus, making breathing even more difficult. Conventional medicine has little to offer patients suffering with COPD. A home remedy may provide relief!

Ginger tea can provide part of the answer in the control of phlegm production. This herbal remedy was used in ancient Chinese medicine to treat a multitude of respiratory disorders, and it has proven particularly effective at breaking up mucus. In addition to the ginger tea iodine helps get the phlegm out. The iodine therapy that can give some much needed relief is potassium iodide (SSKI). This simple compound helps thin the mucus, enabling patients with chronic lung disorders to get the phlegm out. So why aren't these therapies used more often? Because they are natural compound cannot be patented and nobody makes any money off them. Nevertheless, SSKI is still one of the best expectorant available.

Glutathione can offer the long-term additional help. While the ginger tea and SSKI really help, by far the most effective therapy is inhaled glutathione. Free radical damage plays a role in COPD, and glutathione is one of nature’s most potent antioxidants. Patients with chronic lung diseases have low levels of all antioxidants including glutathione, so it only makes sense that this powerhouse would be beneficial. Glutathione can even reverse damage. The key is to deliver glutathione directly to the lung tissues, and the only way to do this is to inhale it. The liquid form of glutathione is placed in a nebulizer, which is a machine that turns liquid into vapors. It is then taken into the lungs by breathing through a mask or mouthpiece. The entire process is quick and easy. It is generally used twice a day

Most people with COPD just accept it. We want you to know there’s hope. Ginger tea is available in health food stores. The suggested dose of SSKI is three to six drops diluted in water daily. You can get it from the Tahoma Clinic Dispensary at tahoma-clinic.com SSKI should not be used by anyone with an iodine allergy and as alway you need to consult your physician before using products of this type. And you need to be aware that high doses of iodine for prolonged periods may suppress thyroid function, so have your thyroid checked periodically. Inhaled glutathione can be used at home but does require a prescription. Since many MD's do not subscribe to these therapies you may need alternative medecine physician. To find alternative physician in your area who may be willing to prescribe it, visit acam.org and do a search.
It offers significant protection against the development of Alzheimer's disease, hearing loss and strokes.

Health, energy, and nutrition have become the primary focus in today's society. Everywhere you look there are ads for nutritious foods, energy drinks, buys for the health-conscious shopper. But unfortunately, today's fast paced world leaves very little time for you to devote to yourself, even enough time to exercise. Day to day routines can be so hectic and exhausting; you're too tired even to think about being active after a hard day of working. Energy drinks are highly popular right now, and the temptation is to pop open a can of energy so you can do more, be even more on the go, get that much more done in a single day. But?energy drinks aren't really healthy or very good for your nutrition. They are notoriously filled with sugar and caffeine, both things that you body doesn't need. So where does that leave you?

?Energy drinks are different from sports drinks. Most energy drinks simply provide lots of sugar or caffeine. Sports drinks are intended to replenish electrolytes, sugars, water and other nutrients and are usually isotonic (containing the same proportions as found in the human body).?-	Wikipedia, Energy Drink, May 2006

As more and more consumers are becoming health-conscious, the market is slowly beginning to change. We do not have to consume sugary, high-caffeine energy drinks any longer. Zsenso iced green tea and Zsenso iced peach green tea, made of rare Chinese green tea leaves, may be your healthy alternative to standard energy drinks. After trying these delicious iced green teas, you may never go back to sugary energy drinks again.?Tea has played a significant role in Asian culture for centuries as a staple beverage, a curative and a symbol of status. It is not surprising its discovery is ascribed to religious or royal origins. Even the earliest texts discuss the health benefits of tea.? -Wikipedia, Green Tea, May 2006

Tip! Our aging is inevitable with the breakdown and degeneration of cells, organs and onset of poor health. There are, however, three amazing nutrients that can help slow and even turn back the hands of time when it comes to aging. These three miracle nutrients are acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC), alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).

Discovered in China, tea has swept the world and become a staple of many cultures around the globe. China, the world's leader of tea, still produces more varieties of tea than any other country. For five thousand years, claims have been made that green tea is beneficial to your health. Recently, more and more studies are being done of green tea and scientists are discovering that these claims are not wholly false.

?An article in New Scientist magazine (20 March 2004) mentions that numerous studies suggest that green tea protects against a range of cancers, including lung, prostate and breast cancer.?-	Wikipedia, Green Tea, May 2006

Tip! The vitamins that have been ingested are often re-directed to facilitate the digestion of nutritionally sterile carbohydrates like sugar and white flour.

Zsenso iced green tea and Zsenso iced peach green tea, made of rare Chinese green tea leaves, can be a health-friendly alternative to sugary, highly caffeinated energy drinks. Look for Zsenso iced tea products in your area, or purchase Zsenso iced green teas online.

But, if you like a lot variety in your energy drinks, XS energy drinks are the best choice for you. XS energy drinks are available in all options: caffeine-free, zero-carb, and sugar free choices. The list of flavours goes on and on: rootbeer, cranberry-grape, tropical, citrus, cherry, tea-berry, and electric lemon, to name a few. In caffeine-free versions, buyers can find rootbeer blast, cranberry-grape blast, and tropical blast.

Tip! Mahonia Grape Extract – this herbal nutrition supplement is used to treat acne, chronic constipation, colds, flu, eczema, gallbladder conditions, dysentery, malaria, parasites, psoriasis and urinary tract infections.

You can be health conscious, care about nutrition, and still find an energy drink that won't do you more harm than good – as long as you know where to look for it. XS energy drinks and Zsenso iced green teas will taste great and won't fill you up with sugar and carbs that will hurt more than help. Energy drinks that can be healthy, too? You'd have to drink it to believe it!

I don't think I was the first to use the expression ?age-related functional decline', but I think it an excellent descriptive summary of what happens as we age. Aging, as we experience it, is the result of many related physiological processes slowing gradually, or in some cases rapidly. Everything that used to run at full tilt gradually slows to a crawl, and finally, one or more of these processes gets so broken that we die.

Aging, as we experience it, is the result of many related physiological processes slowing gradually, or in some cases rapidly. Everything that used to run at full tilt gradually slows to a crawl, and finally, one or more of these processes gets so broken that we die.

We all age, we will all die; those are the unavoidable facts. The only thing we have some control over is whether, by our lifestyle and actions, we slow the process or speed it up. Over the social history of civilization, our great writings and traditions have upheld norms of behavior and action that seem to lead to fuller and longer life, warning us against those things that make life less worth living and shorten it. We tend to neglect or disregard this wisdom in our youth, and then wish we had followed it when we are older. At some point we get concerned about our health and fitness and decide to start from that point on to get our act together. That happened for me when I was 30. But at 33, I got serious, and made it a life priority. I decided that I did not just wish to avoid disease; I wanted to learn how to optimize my health and fitness, and maintain it throughout the aging process.

Did You Know Bilberry Extract – improves eye health and night vision. Clinical tests confirm that the herbal nutrition supplement bilberry is effective in treating eye diseases such as cataracts, retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma and myopia.

Research on aging has found four major mechanisms that bring about this decline. These are: OXIDATIVE DAMAGE – damage by free radicals at the molecular level, GLYCATION/GLYCOSYLATION – bonding of sugars to proteins that stiffens tissues and destroys their function, INFLAMATION – a repair/immune process that becomes more prominent, damaging and indiscriminant as we age, and SENESCENCE – cells stop dividing due to loss of telomere length; this seems to set maximum lifespan limit. Maintaining physical capability (and mental capability) is a matter of delaying and minimizing the effects of these aging mechanisms for as long as possible. The benefits are worthy of effort, and as science advances, technology may allow us to outrun aging entirely. I'm not holding my breath on this, but it is interesting to ponder that we may someday be able to reverse-age as we grow older. I don't know what the world would be like with a huge population of youngsters over 200 years young, but I wouldn't mind being among those to first deal with the problem.

Tip! The vitamins that have been ingested are often re-directed to facilitate the digestion of nutritionally sterile carbohydrates like sugar and white flour.

The tools we have to combat these aging mechanisms are not well understood by the average citizen. Most know that we should eat right, exercise some, get enough rest and have a positive, constructive attitude. Some know that there are supplements that slow the aging process or prevent disease. But, the devil is in the details and the details are presented to us with of much confusion. Two examples: We were told for the last 30 years that fats were bad and carbohydrates were good, clean burning, etc. But the less fat and the more carbs we ate, the fatter we got, and the higher the incidence of type II diabetes, heart disease and cancer climbed in our population. Then, we were told that we needed anti-oxidants and one of the best was vitamin-E. But the vitamin-E we were told to take was alpha-tocopheryl. Vitamin-E turns out to be made up of four tocopheryls and four tocotrienols, all of which have anti-oxidant properties and are synergistic in the way they de-energize free radicals in different tissues of the body. Taking large doses of alpha-tocopheryl actually creates a vitamin-E deficiency, increasing free radical damage in many areas of the body.

News- Mahonia Grape Extract – this herbal nutrition supplement is used to treat acne, chronic constipation, colds, flu, eczema, gallbladder conditions, dysentery, malaria, parasites, psoriasis and urinary tract infections.

How does one find lasting truth in the midst of shifting knowledge? The best way, in my mind, is to listen intently to the debate; listen to all the viewpoints, old and new, read all sides of the arguments, and then pick what make the most sense to you. Ultimately, you are solely responsible for the lifestyle choices you make and their impact on your health.

Still, the tools for combating age-related functional decline are indeed NUTRITION, EXERCISE, REST and a POSITIVE ATTITUDE. At some age, for each of us, we have to make up for the deficiencies of aging by adding SUPPLEMENTS and HORMONAL ENHANCEMENT if we want to stay in the game and be able to play hard to the last inning (period, set, quarter, etc.). In the pages below I will do my best to distill the truth of what promotes health, strength and vitality into advanced age, as I have come to know and experience it in my last 34 years of research and self-experimentation. Much more information is presented on the website I edit: http://www.seniorfitness.com and you can see some video proof that the principles I promote work reasonably well.

! Making a few simple vegetable and fruit additions to your diet could add years to your life and aid greatly in weight control. It could not be much simpler or less expensive.

Part 1. Nutrition – the Raw Material for Health and Power
Start with food – the basic materials that build and sustain the body. In our prime we can seemingly eat anything and digest it, absorb it, assimilate it and utilize it. But as we age, stomach acid and enzyme production decrease, digestion worsens, absorption and assimilation of nutrients becomes less effective. Mechanisms for getting nutrients into our cells, and waste products out, become less effective. The basic starting point for any anti-aging effort is to eat all the necessary nutrients and enhance the mechanisms for digestion, absorption and assimilation.

We tend to think of our body as a self-contained object like a chair or maybe a car, and yes we need to input food and water or we get messed up, but the tendency is to think of oneself as the same today as we were yesterday. Nothing could be further from the truth. We are constantly tearing down and rebuilding every organ, cell and DNA molecule we possess. Even our bones are constantly replacing themselves. The material for all this renovation is food. Any deficiency in the needed materials, even short term, and our body will cleverly sacrifice one part to repair another; like scavenging muscle for protein to repair sunburned skin.

The body is an amazingly complex system; its nutritional requirements are equally complex and yet humanity has been thriving on a wide range of regional diets for a long time. In most cases, primitive regional diets make the best of what is foods are available and the physical conditions that prevail, and for perhaps millions of years, have allowed us to reach reproductive age and live long enough to rear children to replace us. The current purpose, however, is to eat so well that we get all the nutrients we need to maximize our health and life span, and to avoid functional decline (and pain) as long as possible.

Did You Know Our aging is inevitable with the breakdown and degeneration of cells, organs and onset of poor health. There are, however, three amazing nutrients that can help slow and even turn back the hands of time when it comes to aging. These three miracle nutrients are acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC), alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).

Here are most of the basic principles for obtaining, digesting, absorbing and assimilating all the right nutrients:

Eat mostly that which is plucked from the ground, off a tree or bush, or was walking, swimming or flying recently, and its corollary – Eat almost nothing that comes in a bag or a box. – Our entire evolutionary history was spent eating foods described in the first line. It makes immense sense to me that we evolved to prosper on such foods. Eat real, whole, unprocessed foods! We humans have recently rediscovered that the red and blue fruits are loaded with anti-oxidants, that the cabbage family vegetables are rich in cancer-fighting sulforaphanes. Do you know that grass-fed beef is high in omega-3 fats, and actually reduces inflammation like fish and fish oils? Make baked goods (cakes, cookies, desserts and white breads) a rare part of your diet.

Customized Nutrition & Personal Training. Nutrition eBook, Personal Training & Customized Nutrition Programs.

Fat is absolutely necessary for survival, but there are Fats that Heal and Fats that Kill – that is the title of an amazing book by Udo Erasmus – a 'must read' for anyone interested in optimum health. If you don't eat enough of the right fats, virtually every cell in every organ of your body will be compromised. Fats, however, require bile, produced by the liver and metered by the gallbladder, for digestion in the small intestines. Poor bile flow or an obstructed gallbladder will make digesting fats an uncomfortable task. The liver manufactures approximately one quart of bile every day, which serves as a carrier for toxic substances to be effectively eliminated from the body. In addition, the bile emulsifies fats and fat-soluble vitamins in the intestine, improving their absorption. When the excretion of bile is inhibited (cholestasis), toxins stay in the liver longer with damaging effects. Many seniors have slow bile production, and need to be taking supplements (such as Milk Thistle and SAM-E) to enhance bile production.

• You can improve your memory with supplements. Mental function is largely dependent on an adequate flow of blood and nutrients to the brain.

Avoid all refined oils; use extra-virgin olive oil, extra-virgin coconut oil or butter for food and cooking, and its corollary - Eat or drink nothing that has the words 'partially hydrogenated' on the label. Please read my article on hydrogenation to understand the gravity of what these fats do in your body, then get Erasmus' book and fully understand the physiology of fats and their importance to your health. If you don't eat enough fat, you will be unable to reduce your body-fat levels; you can't be lean and muscular unless you eat enough fat. Bear in mind that those incredibly ripped contest photos you see in the fitness magazines are capturing moments of temporary near-starvation, and it is not uncommon for contestants to collapse backstage because of severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. This is not a healthy state you should strive for.

Sensible portion size is a major part of eating correctly; never eat until you're full. Eating five or six small meals a day is essential for fat control and muscle growth. Most people over 45 have a protruding belly; the primary cause is eating three solid (read Big) meals a day. A very good gauge to portion size is that your protein serving (meat, fish, fowl or vegetarian) should be about the size of the palm of your hand (fingers and thumb removed). The rest of the meal should not exceed that weight in total. You can go some overboard on fibrous, non-starch vegetables, but small meals are the rule; shrink your stomach to fit in your abdominal cavity without a bulge. This one practice alone will reduce your blood sugar swings and slow the glycation mechanism of aging to a crawl.

• Gingko Biloba Extract – this herbal nutrition supplement promotes mental clarity and concentration, increases alertness and short-term memory and is used in cardiac protection formulas. It offers significant protection against the development of Alzheimer's disease, hearing loss and strokes.

A healthy, active (intense weight training or aerobic sessions or sports 3 days per week) person needs about 1.5 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass to grow muscle. So, in these five to six meals, if three of them have palm-sized meat courses or a couple of eggs, you will not be far from the right number. If you make the other two to three meals fruit, vegetables, nuts or starch-based meals, you should get adequate fat and protein intake. A protein drink after a workout will start the repair process and supply immediate amino acid needs. A protein drink before bed will reduce normal muscle loss during the night and force some stored body fat to be burned during sleep.

Nutrition We have a full line of weight-loss, nutritional and personal-care products. Weight-Management Programs provide fast, safe, effective weight loss, increased energy and improved health.

Learn about food combining; basically, don't eat starches and proteins together – they will stay in your stomach for hours and you won't absorb the protein. Proteins require an acid stomach environment for the meat-digesting enzymes (proteases) to work. The youthful stomach produces abundant hydrochloric acid for just that purpose. Starches require an alkaline stomach for the starch-digesting enzymes (amylases) to do their stuff. Combining them slows the process badly for the aging stomach. Hence the reputation of beans and chili as gas-builders; beans are high in protein and starch – tough on old stomachs. Many nutritionists will insist that you should eat a balance of protein, carbs and fats in every meal. I say they should try that at 60-plus and see how bloated they feel for the next three hours.

Nutrition: The Key to a Heathlier You Look and feel great with inner and outer nutrition.
Stomach acid and enzyme production decreases as we age – digestion worsens, absorption and assimilation of nutrients is less effective. Acid indigestion or heartburn is a clear sign that we are producing insufficient hydrochloric acid (HCl) and/or pepsin. It means food is staying in the stomach because it is not digesting. The problem is not too much acid, but too little. The media (and the medical community) will have you believe you need antacids or Prilosec to shut down acid production, but those strategies make proteins virtually indigestible and unavailable for assimilation. Take an HCl with Pepsin capsule with any protein meal and see how much faster your meal digests, with no heartburn. There are many digestive enzyme formulations available that will make digestion a breeze. If you have frequent heartburn you are priming yourself for esophageal cancer. With proper sized meals, adequate HCl and digestive enzymes you should overcome most digestive issues, and improve virtually all bodily functions as a result of increased nutrients available at the cellular level.

Nutrition Schools Directory A guide to careers and education in nutrition, and a directory of nutrition schools with school profiles.

The next important aid to digestion is a source of friendly bacteria or Probiotics. If you have ever had a course of antibiotics, you have decimated the flora that should beneficially inhabit your digestive track. These bacteria, that we have evolved with symbiotically, are an important part of the digestive process, and create certain vitamins and enzymes for us. They play a vital role in our immune function. By their presence, they inhibit the overgrowth of harmful bacteria such as Salmonella and E-coli, fungi and parasites. I have been the victim of food poisoning on several occasions, and am familiar with the progression of it symptoms. Immediately dosing with several probiotics capsules will stop it in its tracks. I always have them on hand, and at any sign of an upset stomach or intestinal stress, I pop two or three capsules and the problem subsides. My favorite brand is now named I-Flora, and you can Google for a supplier. For the most part these friendly bugs live beyond the stomach, but some bacteria such as H-pylori will bloom to dangerous and destructive levels unless the stomach is bathed in strong HCl frequently. Using antacids on a regular basis give these critters the advantage they need to infect the stomach lining and promote ulcers.

Eat or drink almost nothing with sugar in it, refined or otherwise; give up sodas. All simple sugars and high-glycemic foods will rapidly raise blood sugar, causing an insulin output for the purpose of lowering the blood sugar level back under 100mg/dl. Glycation (the bonding of sugars to proteins), sited above as one of the four primary aging mechanisms, is an unavoidable consequence of burning glucose as a metabolic fuel. But, research has shown that keeping blood sugar in a narrow range between 90 and 95 reduces glycation, the primary cause of the damage associated with diabetes and high blood sugar. Chronic high blood sugar leads to insulin resistance and sustained levels of both blood glucose and insulin as seen in type II diabetes. Insulin itself is inflammation-promoting, and chronic high levels result in rapid aging of most body tissues. The key offender these days is high fructose corn syrup. It has been hyped as very healthy because it doesn't cause a rapid insulin response; it still shoots blood sugar through the roof, and is pro-inflammatory – avoid it entirely.

NutriData – FDA Compliant Analysis NutriData offers nutrition analysis to the food industry. We offer expert analysis, labeling and food consulting services to food service companies, manufacturers and schools.

Another of the big offenders today is the boxed breakfast serial; generally loaded with sugar and refined flour. Even the Granola types increase blood sugar too rapidly, and most are based on hydrogenated fats for shelf life. I haven't eaten a breakfast serial in two decades. I do eat plenty of free-range eggs with diced vegetables lightly stir-fried in butter and olive oil; high in protein, fiber, good fats. The other favorite is cottage cheese with diced fresh fruit stirred in.

MyFitnessCommunity.com – Nutrition Buy nutrition products at MyFitnessCommunity.com's Online Nutrition and Supplement Superstore. Over 20,000 vitamins and supplements to choose from on sale.

Carbonated soft drinks are highly acidic, and raise blood acidity. The body responds by pulling calcium out of our bones to buffer/reduce the pH of the body's fluids – not something you want happening to your bones. The sugar load from a soda is enormous; if I were looking for a single significant cause of obesity in children, I would site soft drinks as the number one culprit. Give them up and drink almost anything else. Avoid big glasses of any fruit juices; it is far better for your blood sugar levels to eat the fruit.

If you have signs of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowl syndrome or lupus, try eliminating all grains and grain products. I say this because it is very hard to tell what grain products contain as the constituents of their flour. Gluten is the big offender, but it shows up in many grains, and is not sited as an ingredient. Mankind has lived without grains in many regions and times; archeological evidence suggests that inflammatory diseases increase in cultures that depend on grains as the prime foodstuff. Two to three weeks are usually all that is required to see a reversal of symptoms if gluten sensitivity is the culprit.

Nature's Blueprint for Nutrition Rediscover your body's natural vigor and brilliance.
These principles fairly well sum up what I have learned about getting the right nutrients from the right foods, digested, absorbed and assimilated. There is much more at the detail level to learn, but this is a very good start to eating right and getting the most out of it. I have mentioned a few supplements that enhance digestion, but the bulk of that topic will be saved for part 3. I want to impress upon the reader that what you eat is the primary basis for your health, or lack-there-of. This information has been long coming to credibility, yet it is amazing to me that my grandmother was aware of most of it from a folk standpoint. One of my goals at Senior Fitness.com is to point our readers to credible sources of information, and to filter out the junk from the treasure.
In Part 2 we will take up the topic of exercise, and address specific supplements that greatly enhance the results of exercise – muscle growth, strength gains, endurance and cardio-vascular-lung improvement, resistance to injury as well as grace, balance, flexibility and poise.

In Part 3 we will discuss the broader category of Supplements to nutrition and supplements that extend fitness into advancing age.

Ok so you’ve made it to 50 and have a solid career. Best of all you have time to exercise again. If you start now, you can turn back the clock by increasing your metabolism, testosterone, growth hormone, muscle mass, flexibility, and bone mass. The first step is to grease your hinges by taking care of the joints. The average guy begins to have trouble with his knees and shoulders in his 50s.

Many exercises, and particularly resistance training offer a good way to prevent arthritis. If you’re lifting weights, and trying to watch your own weight and be sure you get enough protein. The average 180-pound man needs a lot of protein. Aim for between 110 and 140 grams a day to build and repair muscle. To get 100 grams, you could have two large eggs, two glasses of milk, 4 ounces of chicken breast, and an 8-ounce steak. Eat another 8-ounce steak, and you’re up to 150. Now let’s be reasonable since you’d be nuts to eat like that. Here’s a good alternative way to start your day. Have a protein shake instead. A study found that people who consumed a protein shake lost more weight and body fat than those who ate the same amount of calories in food with 60 percent less protein.

Here's a great shake that will not add needless pounds but provide the protein you need as well as other great nutrients.

Shake Recipe combine the following in a blender:

1 scoop High Protein Blend or whey powder

1 scoop Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex protein powder

1 teaspoon Glutamine powder

1 teaspoon MSM powder

1 tablespoon Ground Flaxseed

1/2 tablespoon Safflower or Olive Oil

1-2 tablespoons Apple Cider vinegar

1 tablespoon of Lecithin granuals

10-12 soy milk

1/2 cup of fresh or frozen strawberries

1/4 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

1/2 banana

Blend until smooth.

This is the recipe for a medium sized male. This High Protein Weight Loss Shake is very filling and provides energy to spare. It will carry you through the morning energized and without hunger. In fact, you'll feel so full and satisfied you won't even think about eating or desire anything more. That's the power of protein and healthy carbohydrates.
