Numerous researchers have reported excellent results in arthritic patients using niacinamide. While niacin opens up the blood vessels near the surface and causes a flushing sensation, niacinamide only opens up the deep blood vessels like those surrounding the joints.

Cases of moderate arthritis have been reporte with outstanding results by taking 1,000 to 1,500 mg a day. In more severe cases, as much as 3,000 mg to 4,000 mg have been recommended. In all instances the dosage should be divided into 5 or 6 doses spread throughout the day rather than all at once. It should also be taken with the knowledge and supervision of your nutritionally oriented doctor.

Longevity and Cognitive Decline Several studies have found that selenium blood levels fall as we age and those with the lowest levels experience shorter life spans. One study showed a drop of 7 percent at age 60 and 24 percent by age 75. In one study involving 1,389 patients ages 60 to 71, it was discovered that, when compared to those with the higher selenium levels, those with the lower levels have a highest likelihood of experiencing cognitive and neurological problems. (Epidemiology 07;18:52–58) (Sci Total Environ 95;170:133–139) (Med Hypotheses 97;48:355–360)

Cancer Selenium prevents cancer. It’s been proven time and time again. One study involved 1,312 patients with no melanoma skin cancer. Half received a placebo and the other half received 200 mcg of selenium for an average of 4½ years. Those who took the selenium had an overall decrease in all cancers of 35 percent compared to those on the placebo. Prostate cancer decreased by 63 percent, lung cancer by 46 percent, and colorectal cancer by 58 percent. The effect was so dramatic that the blinded part of the study was ended early so those on the placebo could be told the benefits of taking selenium. (JAMA 96;276:1957–1963)

Other research has now found that increasing levels of selenium could cut the incidence of bladder cancer by as much as 70 percent. And it also appears that breast cancer is far more prevalent in individuals with low selenium levels—and supplementation could lower those rates as well. (J Surg Oncol 80;15:67–70) (Mol Carcinog 99;26:213–225) A study in Arizona of 1,763 individuals found that those with lower levels of selenium were more likely to have polyps in their intestinal tract than those with higher levels of the mineral (33 percent compared to only 9 percent). Polyps are considered pre-cancerous. (J Natl Cancer Inst 04;96:1669–1675)

Arthritis This is another area where there hasn’t been enough research concerning selenium. We do know that with inflammatory arthritic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis there are consistently lower levels of selenium in the blood, and oftentimes a low intake of the mineral. Selenium is a part of not only antioxidant proteins, but anti-inflammatory ones as well. Along with omega-3 fatty acids, selenium can prove to be a godsend to many with rheumatoid arthritis. (Biol Trace Elem Res 96;53:51–56) (Ann Rheum Dis 94;53:51–53) (Semin Arthritis Rheum 97;27:180–185)

Most people should take of selenium supplement between 200–400 mcg/day. This has been proven to help in cancer, AIDS, and other conditions, on top of whatever one consumes in their diet, wouldn’t be a problem. Research consistently has shown these levels to be totally safe and effective.

You can’t expect to have topnotch sexual function if you have poor overall health. Hypertension, cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled diabetes, and other disorders involving impaired circulation are commonly linked with sexual dysfunction. That’s because optimal blood flow is required to produce erections in men and clitoral engorgement in women. Other conditions that can affect interest in sex and the ability to act on that interest include anxiety, depression, hormonal imbalances, chronic pain, and neurological problems. Once these health issues are tackled, desire and function often return.

Many of the medications used to treat these diseases make things even worse for your sex life. For example, psychotropic drugs are notorious for causing significant sexual dysfunction. Studies suggest that up to 60 percent of the men and women taking Prozac and related SSRI antidepressants have difficulty achieving orgasm. Also problematic are some blood pressure–lowering drugs, and this is especially true for beta blockers but includes stimulants, narcotics, antihistamines, sleeping pills, and peptic ulcer and heart medications.

Harvard researchers have found that men who eat a good diet, exercise regularly, and maintain their optimal weight are able to delay age-associated erectile dysfunction by 10 years or so. Among the bad habits that contribute to sexual problems are drinking too much alcohol, overeating (obesity), and smoking. As you can see, anything you can do to improve your overall health will also improve your sexual function. Men who are having sexual difficulties should give supplemental testosterone a try. Testosterone production tapers off throughout adulthood. This decline is linked not only with sexual problems but also with increased risk of obesity, loss of muscle and bone mass, heart disease, diabetes, and even death. Supplemental testosterone is an amazing libido lifter. (High levels of this hormone explain why young men think about sex so often.) If lack of interest is your problem, I can almost guarantee it will work. But sexual desire isn’t the main problem for most men—it’s erectile dysfunction (ED). And testosterone can also improve function. If testosterone doesn’t work, you can move on to alternatives such as Viagra, Cilas and other ED drugs.

ABC television recently ran a Barbara Walters Special entitled, "Live to be 150 – Can You Do It?" On the program, Barbara Walters interviewed several scientists with various theories regarding how to combat the aging process. One of the scientists, Dr. David Sinclair, made news last year when he reported that resveratrol, given in large doses in animal trials, can counter the effects of chronic health concerns of aging rats, leading to about a 30% prolongation of life and more importantly, an improved quality of life.
Dr. Sinclair felt that these results could potentially be replicated in humans since he indicated that our genes are quite similar to those of rats.

In fact, the National Human Genome Research Institute (a division of the National Institutes of Health) confirmed in a March 31, 2004 news release that the human and the rat genome are very closely related and similar.

The institute states "almost all human genes known to be associated with diseases have counterparts in the rat genome and appear highly conserved through mammalian evolution, confirming that the rat is an excellent model for many areas of medical research".

During the program, Dr. Sinclair remarked that he found this anti-aging molecule quite by accident. His research showed that resveratrol turns on certain genes which control the aging process. Dr. Matt Whiteman, a principal investigator and senior lecturer at Peninsula Medical School, recently commented, "resveratrol's antioxidant effects in the test tube are well documented, but our research shows that the link between high levels of glucose, its damaging effect on cell structure and the ability of resveratrol to protect against and mend that damage."

Aside from resveratrol's ability to turn on certain enzyme systems which help with the aging process, it also appears to stop damage by creating certain proteins which help prevent the production of free radicals. Studies indicate consuming several glasses of red wine per day appears to have favorable effects on longevity.

Unfortunately, consuming the level of resveratrol utilized in Dr. Sinclair's studies would require literally hundreds of glasses of red wine per day, not a good idea. It appears the optimal supplement level of resveratrol translated by milligrams per kilogram from the animal studies to the average human, would be about 200 mgs per day.

Another scientist interviewed in the Barbara Walters Special indicated that he believed the key to longevity was taking mega doses of vitamins, as well as one nutrient in particular called phosphatidylcholine. He indicated that phosphatidylcholine actually helps repair cells. Phosphatidylcholine belongs to a group of nutrients known as phospholipids. Phospholipids are incorporated in the membrane of every cell within the body.

A naturally occurring antioxidant found in fruits and vegetables selectively kills leukemia cells without harming healthy cells, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine published their findings online in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. The findings promise an effective, nontoxic approach to treating leukemia.

"Current treatments for leukemia, such as chemotherapy and radiation, often damage healthy cells and tissues and can produce unwanted side effects for many years afterward. So, there is an intensive search for more targeted therapies for leukemia worldwide," said corresponding author Xiao-Ming Yin, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pathology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Yin and his co-workers isolated a naturally modified anthocyanidin, known as cyanidin-3-rutinoside or C-3-R, from black raspberries and observed its effects on human leukemia and lymphoma cell cultures. The researchers found that low doses of C-3-R caused about half of the human leukemia cells to die within 18 hours of treatment. When the dose was more than doubled, all of the leukemia cells died; the research team noted the same response in lymphoma cells.

Yin and his team focused on one of the most common anthocyanidins, which are forms of anthocyanins — water-soluble flavonoids that give fruits and vegetables their color, and are thought to aid in attracting honeybees to plants. The authors noted that previous studies have demonstrated the antioxidant benefits of anthocyanidins.

The researchers reported that C-3-R induced an "oxidative stress" in tumor cells but not in healthy cells. According to Yin, these results indicate that C-3-R is highly selective against cancer cells and offers "a very promising approach for treating a variety of human leukemias and, perhaps, lymphomas as well."

Both leukemia and lymphoma are types of cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, 44,000 cases of leukemia will be diagnosed in the United States in 2007 and some 22,000 leukemia-related deaths will occur in 2007. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society reported that more than 66,000 new cases of lymphoma were diagnosed in 2006.

In a recent edition of the journal Current Opinions of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, researchers from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit reported that there was compelling evidence suggesting that antioxidant supplementation is beneficial for improving, and even reversing, the effects of several types of acquired hearing loss. They hypothecated that at a cellular and sub-cellular level, hearing impairment seems, in many cases, to be precipitated by oxidative stress and damage.

In a related article from The University of Michigan published in the October 2007 edition of the journal Neurobiology of Aging, researchers noted that there appears to be oxidative imbalance in the aging inner ear. Researchers investigated oxidative stress in the cochlea of a group of aging mice. They noted that over time there were increasing markers of oxidative stress, with decreased levels of antioxidant proteins and enzymes found in the cochlea of these mice. They noted an imbalance of redox status possibly could be a component of age-related hearing loss.

There was a study out of Israel published in the journal Kidney International in August 2007 regarding drug induced hearing loss. In a group of forty patients in a study protocol, those patients given N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) appeared to have oto-protective effects. They noted that the study suggested that NAC supplementation may ameliorate antibiotic induced oto-toxicity in patients undergoing dialysis. NAC is a powerful antioxidant proven to boost glutathione levels up to 92% and is more effective when compared to glutathione supplementation. In fact, if you have over dosed on Tylenol the recommended way to reverse toxicity in the hospital is intravenous NAC. The reason Tylenol is liver toxic is the fact that it depletes glutathione levels in the liver, leading to free radicals destroying healthy liver cells. Whey protein has also been proven to boost glutathione levels.

There was an article published May 2007 in the journal Free Radical Biology Medicine, again out of the University of Michigan. This study involved the effects of hearing loss after severe noise trauma. It reported that the antioxidant agents vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E in synergy with magnesium appeared to effectively preclude noise-induced trauma. It also noted that this supplementation was highly effective in reducing both hearing loss and cell death, even when supplementation was initiated one hour before noise exposure.

All of the U.S. politicians are talking about the high cost of health care. Unfortunately they are not really concerned but simply looking for votes. Here's how the cost can be reduced easily by over 25 BILLION a year for the aging baby boomer and others in their 60's and beyond. If everyone age 65 and older took calcium and vitamin D supplements, approximately 776,000 hospitalizations for hip fractures could be avoided. Estimated savings: $16.1 billion. If people in that same age group took 1,800 mg of fish oil daily, we’d be able to cut back on 374,301 hospitalizations for coronary artery disease. Estimated savings of hospitalization plus physicians fees: $3.2 billion.

If those with macular degeneration took 6–10 mg of lutein with zeaxanthin daily, 190,927 of them might be able to remain independent and stay out of nursing homes due to vision loss. Estimated savings: $3.6 billion. As you can see, routine use of just a handful of supplements would result in astounding savings, not only in money but in pain and suffering as well. The government conducts public health campaigns encouraging people to get vaccinations, to say no to drugs, and to wear seatbelts. Why not broadcast the benefits of nutritional supplements?

Insurance companies require only a small co-payment for drugs, hospitalizations, and surgeries. Why not help pay for supplements, too?

Ten Proven Benefits of Supplements
Thousands of scientific studies have established the safety and positive effects of antioxidants and other nutrients in multivitamins. Here are a few of
the proven benefits:

1.	Ensure optimal intake of essential nutrients
2.	Fight free radical damage throughout the body
3.	Delay onset of macular degeneration/cataracts
4.	Protect against cardiovascular disease
5.	Improve insulin sensitivity
6.	Lower risk of bone fractures
7.	Increase energy levels
8.	Help preserve memory, reduce risk of dementia
9.	Boost immune function, guard against infection
10.	Reduce sick days in people with diabetes

About 60% of men have significant balding by age 50. (About 2% of women also suffer major hair loss.) Medications work, but only so well. Transplants offer better results. Doctors take small tufts of hair from the back of the head and move them to the front or top of the scalp. New techniques make the plugs less painfully obvious. The cost is $3,000 per procedure. Typically, three to five are needed. And there is a downside in that the restored hair still looks thin.

Hair Loss – Vitamins, Diet and Supplements

The more stressful your life, the more important it is that you are taking vitamins, eating a healthy diet and even taking nutrient supplements that will help you in preventing hair loss.

• Vitamin A is an essential vitamin to help you with hair loss and thinning hair. However, be sure to not take more than 25,000 IU daily as it could lead to more hair loss or other severe problems.

• Vitamin C and E are two antioxidants vitamins that are important for keeping your hair, looking fuller and shinier, and scalp healthy.

• Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, deficiencies are associated with an increased production of sebum (oil produced by the hair follicles). However, too much B2 and increased sebum production may result in reduced strength of the hair shaft.

• Vitamin B3, niacin – can produce a skin "flush", an uncomfortable feeing, or "hot flash". If you do decide to take this, take the minimum and see how your body reacts first.

• Vitamin B6, pyridoxine hydrochloride – studies have shown B6 to help with healthy hair growth.

• Vitamin B12

• Folic acid is known for its importance in healthy cellular activity, proper cell division, and proper hair growth.

• Biotin – Helps produce keratin, may prevent graying and hair loss.

• Inositol – Keeps hair follicles healthy at the cellular level.

Many of these vitamins are provided by taking a good daily multi-vitamin and from eating a healthy diet.

Adjusting your diet will slow down the loss of hair as many of the vitamins that help you with health hair may be provided by the diet you eat.

Tip! Diets: body image & weight lossBeing on low-calorie diets or diets that restrict certain types of food can significantly impact getting enough of all kinds of vitamins.

• Vitamin C can be found in several vegetables and fruit, especially in citrus fruits. Vitamin E is known to help with circulation in your scalp area. This is found in various beans, as well as oils.

• Sources of B2 come from grains, or breads and cereals, milk and milk products as well as meat, poultry, and fish.

• Niacin (B3) food sources include brewer's yeast, wheat germ, fish, chicken, turkey and meat.

• B6 comes from brewer's yeast, liver, whole grain cereals, vegetables, organ meats and egg yolk.

• Sources of B12 include chicken, fish, eggs and milk.

• Biotin is found in yeast, grains, liver, rice, milk, egg yolk, liver, kidney, soy and barley.

Vitamin Power Several vitamins are known powerful anti-oxidants and act as protective buffers within our cells to counter the destructive effect caused by constant free radical activity.

• Foods rich in inositol are whole grains, yeast, liver, citrus fruits, eggs, rice, and milk. With the addition of inositol, you will be able to promote hair growth beneath the scalp and have healthier hair.

…And lastly, supplement such as saw palmetto and zinc are very helpful for those looking for natural ways to help with hair loss

Saw palmetto is a type of fruit that is legendary in helping to solve problems with baldness and prostate health in the U.S. and throughout Europe.

Did You Know? Vitamins are not food: Vitamins are sometimes called “micronutrients.” Small doses can keep us healthy.

Zinc is best known to effect hair loss when there is an absence of a substantial amount of the nutrient. Zinc deficiency not only produces problems with hair loss, but also with changes in the scalp. The scalp may become too dry or flaky and may often times be irritated because of the lack of nutrients. There are many times where zinc has also shown to be effective in stopping hair from turning gray.

Stopping hair loss and giving yourself a great looking, healthy head, of hair is not that difficult. Making sure that you are getting the vitamins you need, whether from a multi-vitamin or food sources, and even supplementing that with zinc and saw palmetto.

It's not altogether certain why we get more colds in winter compared to summer, although it may, indeed, be related to exposure to the sun and production of vitamin D. Regardless of the exact reason, there was an article just published in the July 2007 edition of The Lancet Infectious Diseases magazine. A group of pharmacists from University of Connecticut did a meta-analysis to evaluate effects of echinacea on incidence and duration of the common cold. The researchers pooled a total of 14 different studies. It was determined that people who took echinacea had a 58% reduced risk of getting upper respiratory tract infections compared to those not taking this herbal supplement. It was also found that when echinacea was taken with vitamin C, there was an incredible reduction in number of colds by 86%. On average, echinacea reduced duration of a cold by 1.4 days.

There have been a series of more positive studies on vitamin D. There was a study published in the June 2007 Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Almost 1,000 men and women, ages 65 and older, participated in a cross-sectional analysis. It was found that after adjusting for age, sex, chronic diseases, body mass index and alcohol consumption, seniors with serum vitamin D levels below 20 ng/ml had poorer physical performance and greater general decline in physical performance. Previous research has shown that low vitamin D levels are not uncommon among seniors. This is probably related to a combination of factors, including reduced dietary consumption of vitamin D, decreased exposure to sunlight and an impaired capacity to naturally synthesize the vitamin. Of the nearly 1,000 people studied, nearly half had low vitamin D levels at the start, and their deficiency was associated with overall poorer physical performance compared to their peers.

Of the nearly 1,000 people studied, nearly half had low vitamin D levels at the start, and their deficiency was associated with overall poorer physical performance compared to their peers.

Over the course of the three-year study, vitamin D-deficient adults were also twice as likely to exhibit a decline in physical performance, such as more difficulty getting up from a chair. In another study also published in the June 2007 Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, researchers from Tufts and Harvard studied effects of vitamin D and calcium in the role they may play in development of inadequate blood sugar health. Studies and clinical trials in adults and found a relatively consistent association between low vitamin D status, calcium dietary intake and prevalence of developing inadequate blood sugar health.

It was noted that vitamin D and calcium insufficiency may negatively influence blood sugar levels, whereas combined supplementation with both nutrients may be beneficial for optimizing glucose metabolism. There were two recent studies published on the beneficial effects of fish oil in regard to abnormal cellular growth. The first was published in the journal Cancer, Epidemiology, BioMarkers and Prevention. Researchers compared blood levels of poly-unsaturated fatty acids in 476 men with abnormal cellular growth of the prostate and looked at a similar number of healthy controls. Those with highest levels of these fatty acids (primarily EPA and DHA from fish oil) noted that there was a 41% reduction in risk of abnormal cellular growth in the prostate compared to men with lowest blood levels.

Most of us, including the health care professionals who advise us, believe food is the best source of nutrients, but the truth is that none of us eat an optimal diet all the time. Worse yet, our soils have become so depleted that plants cannot extract all the vital minerals as they once did. Numerous studies prove that diet alone cannot give you the blood levels of many essential nutrients you need to prevent disease, much less to cure it.

Consumers often want instant benefits when taking multivitamin They want more energy, vigor, faster thinking, better memory recall, increased immunity and protection from disease. Often multivitamins, particularly well-designed brands, deliver on the promises. We age slowly. The progression of aging and age-related disease is synonymous. Studies now reveal, for the first time, long-term vitamin users experience health benefits over those who o occasionally take supplements. For example, since cataracts usually progress slowly, diminishing the transparency of the human eye by a 1 percent per year, the anti-cataract properties of vitamin supplements only become apparent among long-term users of vitamin supplement. Long-term vitamin C users has 70-80 percent reduced risk for cataracts. Regular vitamin E supplement use, for 10 years or more associated with reduced risk of bladder cancer mortality. Regular use for shorter periods of time does not reduce risk.

Coenzyme Q1O (CoQ1O) is a great example of this nutritional shortfall. The average American’s diet provides only about 1 milligram (mg) of CoQ1O a day, yet to effectively slow Parkinson’s disease, you must consume 400-1,200 mg-400 to 1,200 times the amount you’re getting in food! That means that even if you are eating the freshest, best, organically grown produce, you’re still not getting all the nutrients at optimal levels you need.

No, this doesn't mean you need to take handful after handful of supplements several times a day. Really, you need a top-quality multi-vitamin/mineral/ antioxidant and if you have a specific health concern or disease, you may need a few other supplements. Some top-quality multis may even contain almost everything but not the cheap drugstore multi-vitamins, so you’ll need to spend some time checking labels so you don’t duplicate. We recommend capsules whenever possible for quicker and better absorption, plus they are easier to swallow. A few nutrients, such as SAMe and NADH, need to be in tablet form because of stability issues. If you have a specific disease condition, like heart disease or diabetes, you’ll need to consume more supplements compared to someone who is healthy. This list is basic for folks who are generally healthy and want to remain that way.
