Numerous researchers have reported excellent results in arthritic patients using niacinamide. While niacin opens up the blood vessels near the surface and causes a flushing sensation, niacinamide only opens up the deep blood vessels like those surrounding the joints.

Cases of moderate arthritis have been reporte with outstanding results by taking 1,000 to 1,500 mg a day. In more severe cases, as much as 3,000 mg to 4,000 mg have been recommended. In all instances the dosage should be divided into 5 or 6 doses spread throughout the day rather than all at once. It should also be taken with the knowledge and supervision of your nutritionally oriented doctor.

Alcohol is neutralized into carbon dioxide and water in the liver, your body’s primary organ for detoxification. Along the way, however, numerous intermediary products are formed—some more toxic than alcohol itself.

Alcohol is neutralized into carbon dioxide and water in the liver, your body’s primary organ for detoxification. Along the way, however, numerous intermediary products are formed—some more toxic than alcohol itself. Chief among these is acetaldehyde, a close relative of formaldehyde (the substance used to embalm cadavers). Acetaldehyde increases the production of free radicals that damage the liver and stimulate the brain to trigger feelings of nausea and discomfort.

Supplement With Amino Acids, Vitamins, and Herbs
Certain nutrients, taken before that first drink, can neutralize the effects of acetaldehyde. The most important of these is the amino acid cysteine. By supplementing with cysteine (in the form of N-acetylcysteine), you can actually help your body transform toxic acetaldehyde into glutathione, a potent free-radical fighter and the key agent used by your liver to neutralize harmful substances.

Vitamin C, a powerful water-soluble antioxidant, also helps maintain glutathione levels. Because alcohol is a diuretic, you lose vital water-based nutrients when you drink, so supplementing with vitamin C beforehand will help reduce the after-effects of alcohol. The B-complex vitamins are also water-soluble, and deficiencies are common with alcohol use. Make sure you take extra B vitamins when you drink, especially vitamin B1 (thiamin), which is rapidly destroyed by acetaldehyde.

We recommend taking an herbal extract of milk thistle before you imbibe those holiday cocktails. Its active ingredient, silymarin, is one of the most potent liver-protecting substances known. Silymarin increases the glutathione content of the liver by over 35 percent, increasing its capacity for detoxification. It also stimulates protein synthesis and helps generate new liver cells to replace those damaged during detoxification.

When the Party’s Over…
Before you go to bed, drink at least 16 ounces of water, and continue drinking lots of water the next morning—this will go a long way toward staving off a killer headache. If you do suffer a headache the following morning, don’t take acetaminophen (Tylenol). Acetaminophen in conjunction with alcohol can damage your liver, sometimes fatally.

Instead, steep wintergreen tea for 10 minutes and spike it with as much hot-pepper sauce as you can tolerate. Wintergreen contains salicylates, the active ingredient in aspirin, while hot-pepper sauce (or any powdered version of hot red peppers, such as cayenne) contains capsaicin, another painkiller.

A Recap Before the Nightcap

To protect your liver (before you drink and again the next morning), take 500 mg of N-acetylcysteine, 1,000 mg of vitamin C, 50 mg of vitamin B1, and 150 mg of standardized milk thistle extract. You can take them individually or in a multi-nutrient supplement for the liver, such as Source Naturals’ Liver Guard, found in health food stores.

Life Enhancement’s Party Pill II is another good anti-hangover supplement. In addition to cysteine, it is loaded with antioxidants, B-complex vitamins, chromium, and other vitamins and minerals that are depleted by too much alcohol.

Drink at least 16 ounces of water before bed, and again throughout the following day.

For a morning-after headache, sip wintergreen tea spiked with hot pepper.

Remember, moderate alcohol use (1 to 2 drinks a day) appears to have heart-protective effects, but more than this amount negatively impacts your health.

There were two studies recently published in the Archives of Ophthalmology regarding poor visual health that can lead to blindness in the elderly. In the first, researchers evaluated over 4,500 people between ages 60 and 80 who participated in a study by the National Institute of Health's National Eye Institute. Individuals completed a food questionnaire measuring various nutrients. One in particular was DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, found in fatty fish such as salmon and tuna. It was found that those who ate more than two servings a week of fish were least likely to develop poor visual health that can lead to blindness. Authors felt that the fatty acids might help promote cell health and survival as well as improve blood vessel function.

A second study published in the same journal issue reported on over 7,700 people who participated in a national study. Researchers noted that vitamin D intake was associated with a reduced risk of developing poor visual health that can lead to blindness. People were split into five groups based on the level of vitamin D in their blood. Those with the highest had a 40% reduced risk of developing poor visual health compared with those with the lowest amount of vitamin D in their blood. The authors felt that vitamin D was effective by promoting cell health and preventing abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina.

The authors felt that vitamin D was effective by promoting cell health and preventing abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina.

There was a meta-analysis published in the 2007 edition of the journal Pain. Authors reviewed seventeen randomized controlled trials looking at the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in regard to relieving joint pain. It was ascertained that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids for three or four months reduced reported joint pain intensity, minutes of morning stiffness, number of painful and/or tender joints along with reducing consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication.

There was yet another study of the benefits of fish oil published in the May 2007 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. In it, overweight volunteers with poor blood pressure and cholesterol health were randomly assigned to receive fish oil, fish oil and exercise, sunflower oil or sunflower oil and exercise. Subjects consumed 6 grams of tuna per day, equivalent to about 1.9 grams of omega-3 fatty acids. Other subjects consumed 6 grams of sunflower oil a day. The exercise groups walked three days a week for 45 minutes. It was found that those in the fish oil supplemented group had healthier triglyceride and HDL cholesterol levels, as well as healthier function of the inner lining of the arterial walls. Both fish oil and exercise independently reduced body fat.

Another interesting study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine involved over 25,000 adults between ages 35 and 65 who were followed for over ten years up to 2005. During that time, 844 developed poor blood sugar health. Those with the highest cereal fiber intake had a reduced incidence of developing increased blood sugar by 28%. Magnesium intake showed no effect in the study. However, a meta-analysis involving nine clinical trials on fiber intake and eight on magnesium intake showed a 33% reduction in the risk of developing poor blood sugar health with highest cereal fiber intake. The meta-analysis also linked high magnesium intake to a 23% reduction in developing poor blood sugar health. Interestingly enough, fruit and vegetable fiber content did not appear to have any effect.

Many of us have used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for our share of nagging aches and pain as well, especially in the lower back. This is fine when used only occassionally but they are hard on the GI tract, and many of them harm the cardiovascular system. Narcotics like Vicodin are addictive and COX-2 inhibitors have caused hundreds of thousands of heart
attacks and tens of thousands of deaths.

There is a safer and more direct route to relief. When a pain-relieving drug is mixed into a readily absorbed cream and rubbed into the affected area, the
active ingredients penetrate the skin and can provide quick and dramatic relief. Equally important, these drugs are not systemically absorbed to any significant degree, and there is little risk of adverse side effects.

A number of drugs can be administered in this form such as ketoprofen, an NSAID, and ketamine, an anesthetic. A compounding pharmacist simply mixes individualized doses and combinations of these or other drugs into a cream or gel, and the patient applies it directly to the affected area – this is called topical application) and used three or four times a day.

In addition to sciatica and low backache, many types of pain syndromes—arthritis, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, sprains and strains,
and muscle spasms—respond extremely well to topical drugs. This approach is also particularly effective for all types of neuropathic pain, including diabetic, peripheral, post-herpetic, post-surgical, and posttraumatic
neuropathy.

These are drugs and require a prescription, but they are extremely effective. Hopefully your Dr. will write you a prescription and if you need more information in these compounding pharmacies then contact the International
Academy of Compounding Pharmacies at (800) 927-4227, iacprx.org.

Joints are unique structures that receive a considerable amount of wear and tear throughout a lifetime. If you live long enough, work hard enough, and play hard enough, you will probably have to deal with some degree of joint damage sometime in your life. The problems with joints stem from the fact that the cartilage surfaces that make up joints have little, if any, direct blood supply. You should visualize this cartilage as being similar to a sponge. It gets most of its nutrients for repair from the fluid within the joint capsule itself (synovial fluid). As the joint is moved throughout its range of motion, the sponge is compressed and released. This compressing action helps squeeze out waste material from the living cartilage cells.

Just as a sponge sucks in water, when pressure on the cartilage is released nutrients are then pulled into the cartilage cells. Since the survival of every cell of the cartilage surface depends on this regular exchange of waste material and nutrients, moving each joint through its full range of motion daily is one of the first steps for keeping it healthy. The synovial fluid also provides the lubrication and shock absorption for your joints. It contains a couple of compounds called hyaluronic acid and lubricin.

The synovial fluid also provides the lubrication and shock absorption for your joints. It contains a couple of compounds called hyaluronic acid and lubricin.

A great joint supplement is bone broth. Although obesity and a lack of exercise are obviously major contributing factors to the widespread osteoarthritis problems we see today. A large part of the problem is also the fact that bone broths are no longer a part of our diet. Another source of hyaluronic acid is eggs. The parts that you eat—the white and the yolk—are well-known sources of high-quality protein. But the membrane that separates the white from the shell is also composed mostly of protein, plus hyaluronic acid, glucosamine, and chondroitin. In fact, preliminary open-label studies suggest that the membrane itself could help alleviate joint pain.

There is no downside to taking egg membrane now rather than wait years for it to get the blessing of prevention of the pain of stiff and arthritic joints. These supplements aren’t widely available but one that contains just the membrane is a product called NEM. You can contact them at at www.Membrell.com or 800- 749-1291.
