Startling research findings indicate that coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may have a role in cancer treatment. Not only is there favorable human clinical data, but scientists have also discovered new anti-cancer mechanisms related to CoQ 10. CoQ10 was first prescribed in Japan to treat heart disease in the 1960’s. In the 1990s, scientists hypothesized that CoQ10 may help prevent certain brain diseases. When doctors gave high doses of CoQ1O to Parkinson’s patients, disease progression slowed by 44%.

The key to averting cancer-causing foods is knowing which ingredients are cancer promoters (carcinogens) and then reading food labels to permanently avoid consuming those ingredients. Cancer tumors develop by feeding on sugar in the bloodstream. If you eat lots of sugary snacks loaded with simple carbs, you're loading up your bloodstream with the chemical energy needed for cancer cells and tumors to proliferate. No biological system can live without fuel for its chemical processes, including cancer cells.

The increase in the use of nutraceuticals means more cancer survivors. Over the past decade, the decrease in cancer mortality among men is that twice that of women. This is in a large part because of the rate of smoking cessation. Nevertheless, while that's great for men, their death rate remains 46% higher than women. Death rates decreased from 11 of the 15 most common cancers in men and for 10 of the 15 most common cancers in women.

Reseveratrol seems to be helpful in cancer prevention and treatment. Resveratrol inhibits the adhesion of cancer cells, which is a requirement for metastasis, and promotes apoptosis (self-destruction) of cancer cells without harming healthy cells. It also slows angiogenesis, the creation of new blood vessels required for cancer growth.

We’ve discussed the use of capsaicin for joint and muscle aches in the past, and research has shown it may also have the ability to kill cancer cells. Capsaicin is the compound found in hot chili peppers such as jalapeño and cayenne. Recently research from Nottingham University in the UK found that capsaicin was very effective at killing cultures of human lung and pancreatic cancer cells. The study was therefore interesting because capsaicin was very selective at killing only cancer cells, leaving normal cells totally unharmed. This is a most important finding and may affect many who have to undergo cancer treatment.

With well over a million cases surfacing annually, the skin is currently the most common site for cancer to appear. Most skin cancers are not especially invasive or even dangerous. They appear in either basal cells or squamous cells, and typically aren’t cause for a great deal of alarm. However, one type called melanoma, can develop quickly and spread to other tissues where it can turn deadly. As with most conditions, early detection leads to a better prognosis, and skin cancer is one of the most easily treatable forms of cancer.

French cuisine is world famous for its rich sauces, gourmet cheeses, and fine wines. However, the French enjoy a relatively low incidence of coronary heart disease. This apparent anomaly has led scientists to wonder what dietary or lifestyle factors might account for the so-called “French paradox.†Studies indicate that resveratrol, a component of red wine, may help protect the French from the adverse health effects of their traditionally rich diet, while also protecting the liver against the toxic effects of alcohol.

Grape seed extract, which is a powerful antioxidant that studies suggest may have more potent free radical-scavenging activity than vitamin C, vitamin E and beta carotene. Recent studies have found that grape seed extract inhibits the growth of human colorectal tumor cells in the lab and in mice, researchers recently reported.

For many years it was assumed that what you ate each day had little or nothing to do with helping in the prevention of many of our deadliest cancers. However, recent research has proven that nutrition does indeed play a major role in the prevention and treatment of many types of cancer.
