The daily consumption of cola beverÂages is associated with decreased bone mineral density of the hip in older women, according to just-released findings. Researchers examined dietary intake and hip and spine bone mineral density in more than 2,500 men and women in their fifties and sixties. After making necessary adjustments for body mass index, height, age, energy intake, physical activity level, smoking, menopausal status, and estrogen , and intake of alcohol, caffeine, vitamin D, and calcium, they found that cola intake in women was associated with significantly lower bone mineral density of the hip. Drinking single can of cola decreased a woman’s bone density between 4 and 5%, while consuming non-cola carbonated beverages had no effect on bone density. It may be that we phosphoric acid in cola may slowly leach calcium from the bones, decreasing their density.

A study out of Freidrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany showed that once a woman reaches menopause her skin begins to age faster than a man's. The skin contains estrogen receptors, which helps explain why a woman's skin tends to get thin and more wrinkled so quickly once menopause begins. The presence of estrogens in the skin improves thickness and elasticity, the amount of moisture, and collagen content.

Over-the-counter laxatives are big business, generating sales of more than $800 million per year. This is more common as we age and it's most important to deal with it to keep your machinery working properly! Among the safest and most healthful are Metamucil and other products that contain psyllium which is an excellent source of soluble fiber and bulks up the stool and stimulates peristalsis, the wavelike contractions of the colon that keep things moving along. Researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas recently tested a homemade concoction against psyllium. They found that it worked just as well and cost half as much. In a six-week study, patients taking the homemade solution, made up of applesauce, wheat bran, and prune juice, had improvements in bowel function that actually surpassed those of a control group taking the usual dose of psyllium. In addition to soluble fiber, which also helps lower cholesterol, the mixture provides a hefty dose of phytonutrients.

As we age, our skin is more likely to exhibit the effects of photoaging, which produces negative changes in skin color, texture, and health caused by cumulative exposure to ultraviolet light. New findings suggest that antioxidant rich, high-energy compounds may help defend against the effects of photoaging. Free radicals damage not only proteins and DNA, but also the skin's surface lipids.

Beauty, Wrinkles, and the Science of Laughter
When most of us think of 'memory' we think of our brains, but the brain is not the only organ that has a memory. If skin is regularly positioned in a certain manner by reoccurring facial expressions, lines will ultimately form where the skin has been folded.
